Wicking bed project & invitation

By Karen Retra

Seed Savers Albury-Wodonga have partnered with Chep Pallets (Wodonga) and a number of local organisations to re-purpose broken plastic bulk containers into wicking beds for community projects locally.

Ralph and I are coordinating the project which aims to help promote food growing, gardening and sustainability. There are opportunities for seed savers members and friends to get involved, including this coming weekend.

Turning these into these …

… and [right] here’s what we created from them … plants coming soon!

Who will garden in these gorgeous beds?

Chep Pallets generously donated 12 containers which are being retrofitted and installed as wicking beds across four sites locally:

To give them a more pleasing look, Ralph has crafted surrounds for the beds from reused materials including corrugated iron, flooring and pallet wood.
In Corowa, the gardeners are keen to do the surround themselves.

We’ll be sharing further updates from this project as the beds are installed. But if you can’t wait, there’s a chance to come along in Albury this weekend to help install some beds, learn about how they work (and ways you can make your own) or snack on a sausage as the Mayor launches the new community garden we’ll have created.

Here’s what we’ll be doing (photos taken at the installation of the Women’s Centre beds recently):

Details of this weekend’s activities

Here are all the details for the weekend’s activities to mark the kick-off of the new Bungam Community Garden in Albury.

Bungam Community Garden Installation
Sat Jul 18, 2015 | 10:30 am – 3:00 pm
@ Bungam Community Garden (Cnr Creek, Englehardt and Stanley Streets, Albury)

This is going to be an exciting day as the Bungam Community Garden becomes a reality. From 10.30am we will be installing our raised garden beds, wicking beds no less. If you want to find out more about what wicking beds are and see some constructed or even help as we put it all together then come down from the start and join our bunch of keen community gardeners. We will also be stopping at around 1pm for a second show and tell for anyone who misses out on the action in the morning.

Launch of Bungam Community Garden
Sun Jul 19, 2015 | 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm
@ Bungam Community Garden

After a hard days work of installing our garden beds on Sat 18th July we are now going to celebrate the start of our Community Garden adventure. We will be sizzling some sausages from around 12.30pm to share with our neighbours and anyone interested to hear about our Community Garden and then at 1.30pm the Mayor of AlburyCity will join us to sprinkle some organic matter and mark this exciting moment in time with our official launch.

Everyone is welcome to come and help us start our Community Garden with a little bit of hoopla and a whole lot of enthusiasm. For more information call Narelle on 0439 043 335.

Stay tuned for other wicking bed installations, workshops and launches as part of this project. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved. We are even hoping there might be a chance to access more containers for some further beds. And yes, we’ll provide more details as to how these beds were created and how you might give wicking a go at your place!
