Wirraminna Visit

Wirraminna

At our next event: all about native plants and seeds.

Join Seed Savers Albury-Wodonga for a visit to Wirraminna to find out about their native seed production area and growing native plants in our region.

Where: Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre, Howlong Rd, Burrumbuttock.

When: Sat 25th August, 10am to 1pm
(but you’re welcome to stay longer or leave earlier if you wish)

Bring: attire to suit the weather; lunch and water bottle; gardening gloves if planning to help out.

Wirraminna is a 4 hectare former stock reserve, that has been developed and maintained by volunteers since 1995 to showcase native vegetation and wetlands on farms. It includes a large dam, wetlands, natural woodland and native garden beds. There’s also an education centre and lots of interpretative signs.

We’ll take a tour with Wirraminna wonder-women, Sue and Judy, who will share with us how their seed production area functions to help provide local seed for revegetation projects, as well as the incredible diversity of plant species grown at Wirraminna with a wander through the extensive grounds.

We’ll have a break for lunch, so bring something to share if you like, or self-cater.
We’ll also conduct our Annual General Meeting – attendance is optional and it typically takes 10 minutes.

Those with time and interest may like to linger a little longer after lunch and we’ll make a contribution to our hosts’ efforts with a little working bee (likely some planting or weeding). Of course it’ll also be further opportunity to keep talking about the plants and seeds!

Seed Savers members (and other gardeners) will find this a unique opportunity to learn about growing native plants and saving their seed, which is both similar and different to our usual focus on plants for food.

Directions:  Wirraminna is approximately 35 minutes drive from Albury.  View on map. In Burrumbuttock, follow the signs to turn left into Howlong Rd near the store. The main carpark is on your right about 400 metres from this turn, just before the school and entrance to the football ground.
