A spring session all about seeds

Our next Seed Savers gathering is an opportunity to access the seed bank – just in time for spring planting! Plenty of enthusiastic, like-minded gardeners will be on hand to discuss problems and share hints. For those with seed from autumn seed saving, seed cleaning equipment will be available.

A chance for those who have never collected and cleaned seed to learn how to do it.

When: Wednesday 3rd October, 6pm – 7:30pm

Wirraminna Visit

At our next event: all about native plants and seeds.

Join Seed Savers Albury-Wodonga for a visit to Wirraminna to find out about their native seed production area and growing native plants in our region.

Where: Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre, Howlong Rd, Burrumbuttock.

When: Sat 25th August, 10am to 1pm
(but you’re welcome to stay longer or leave earlier if you wish)

Bring: attire to suit the weather; lunch and water bottle; gardening gloves if planning to help out.

Wirraminna is a 4 hectare former stock reserve, that has been developed and maintained by volunteers since 1995 to showcase native vegetation and wetlands on farms. It includes a large dam, wetlands, natural woodland and native garden beds. There’s also an education centre and lots of interpretative signs. Continue reading →

Next gathering: Tues 17 July

It’s that time of year again already! We use our annual stocktake of the shared seed bank as a chance to see which seeds have been coming and going from our seed collection, as well as which ones we need to grow on to ensure they remain viable.

This year we’ll also be using this session as a way to ‘take stock’ of our group and activities. We’re keen to hear your thoughts for the direction of the group as well as what we get up to in the second half of this year. If you are keen to see us continue and thrive, please add your voice.

We know there are benefits to having animals in the mix, but how can we ensure they don’t destroy the garden? SLF runs all November

The Albury-Wodonga Sustainable Living Festival runs throughout the month of November, with an impressive array of events and activities. The showcase event is the Sustainable Living Fair, being held at Junction Square in Wodonga on Saturday 18th of November between 9am and 1pm.

Seed Savers Albury-Wodonga are pleased to be attending again this year, and will be running a kids activity making newspaper pots and potting on seedlings to take home. Continue reading →

Ready to embrace your weeds?

Our next event …

Don’t just reach for the glyphosate! We will look at safer, more environmentally friendly ways of dealing with these “plants in the wrong place”. Best of all, we will learn to view them as friends with a multitude of valuable and delicious uses.

Join us for this special session, presented by Emma Street. You may know edible weeds are a highly nutritious, sustainable, local food source, but how often are they seen as tasty as well? We will discuss some of the species and recipes that make weeds delicious to eat, as well as some ideas to preserve them for use throughout the year.

Film Night: ‘Seed, The Untold Story’

Please come and join us for a screening of the newly released film “Seed, the Untold Story”. We thought it the perfect movie to share with fellow seed savers!

We’re hosting a one-off screening, on Wednesday 9th August, at 6:30pm, at the Sustainable Activity Centre, on the Lincoln Causeway, Wodonga.
